One of the main ways to support patients and GPs is by assessing and advising people with chronic pain about pain management.
The PBS has suggested that patients taking opioid medication for chronic non-cancer pain, be reviewed by a specialist annually.
“Opioid stewardship is all about safe deprescribing.” says Dr David Skalicky. “The PBS regulations are in place to reduce the amount of opioid taken in the community, which is a positive public health initiative. Patients usually feel better taking a little less opioids.”
“Often Mindfulness, CBT, gentle excercise or other forms of active management, take the place of stronger pain mediciations in the management of chronic pain.”
